We regret this statement by the General Secretary of AKEL that distorts reality and the historical truth. Such declarations do not advance peace and security in our region.

Israel, throughout its history, had to protect itself against aggression. AKEL Secretary General refers in his statement to the war of 1967. It is important to recall that during the Six-Day War, Israel defended itself against the attack from three neighboring Arab countries. Israel was compelled to fight for its existence and successfully managed to defend its people.

Israel has always sought peace and was willing to make painful sacrifices to achieve it. This was demonstrated in the peace treaties Israel signed with Egypt and Jordan, which entailed significant compromises. Israel has repeatedly called for direct negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, which unfortunately until now have been rejected.

Anti-Israel campaigns that seek to delegitimize the State of Israel do not only distort the truth, but also damage the prospects for peace.   

Israel and Cyprus are two democratic countries facing major regional challenges. An important achievement in recent years has been the common efforts of Israel and Cyprus to defend the values of democracy and freedom, to offer our peoples a future of peace, security and prosperity.
