The German government supports the resumption of negotiations for a solution of the Cyprus problem, as well as the trilateral meeting to take place later on Monday in Berlin, between UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.
A spokesperson for the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Berlin supports the trilateral meeting financially and technically, in order to provide the such conditions that would allow for calm and safe meetings.
The spokesperson said Germany was in favour of the resumption of talks for a Cyprus settlement, adding that the UN will announce at the end if there has been any progress.
It is no secret that the negotiations are at this point at a standstill, the spokesperson noted, adding that it was especially positive that the two sides were talking again.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
