Conference by UNRF and Green Dot on the integration of robots in the recycling system

The Research Foundation of the University of Nicosia (UNRF) in collaboration with the non-profit organization Green Dot organized the conference "Integration of robotic systems to improve the efficiency of recycling". The conference was held on 22 November 2022 at the premises of the University of Nicosia, with the participation of representatives from the local government, students and citizens who showed great interest in the topic of recycling and its development. 

The conference was organized within the framework of the InterRecycle project which is implemented by the INTERREG V-A Cooperation Program "Greece - Cyprus 2014-2020" and is co-financed by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund-ERDF)) and National Resources of Greece and Cyprus. The beneficiaries of the project are the University of Nicosia Research Foundation (UNRF), the Institute of Technology and Research (FORTH), the Association of Solid Waste Management of Crete (ESDAK) and Green Dot Public Co Ltd (GreenDot).

The conference addressed the Commissioner for the Environment, Mrs. Klelia Vassiliou, highlighting the necessity for integration of technology in the recycling systems. Following Mrs Vassiliou, Dr. Michalis Maniadakis Researcher at the Laboratory of Computational Vision and Robotics (CVRL), at the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Institute of Technology and Research (FORTH) informed the audience about the INTERREG program entitled "InterRecyle – Fast Sorting Robotic System for Promoting Interregional Recycling Activities in Greece and Cyprus". On behalf of the University of Nicosia, VP for Student Affairs Dr. Alexandros Antonaras presented the results of a research which is in progress and is carried out by the UNRF investigating the perceptions of citizens regarding recycling and the recycling systems of Cyprus and Greece. Finally, the General Manager of Green Dot, Mr. Marios Vrachimis, presented the role of the organization, demonstrating how each one of us can do proper recycling. The day ended with a constructive discussion between the speakers and the audience.
