Law Office and Foreign Ministry in contact on individual appeals to ECHR against Turkey

The Law Office is in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to make final decisions on the issue of appeals filed by individuals against Turkey before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Attorney General Costas Clerides has told Cyprus News Agency(CAN) when asked to comment on a relevant news story sent earlier today by the Agency.

The Attorney General said that as a representative of the Government of the Republic he was informed by letters dated 9.8.2019 and 12.8.2019 which were sent by the Registrar of the ECHR that the parties to the two cases namely K.V. Mediterranean Tours Limited v. Turkey and Panayi and Shiartou v. Turkey respectively did not agree to an amicable settlement of the dispute and therefore these two cases will go to trial as to their admissibility and  substance.

He said that the Government of the Republic has been requested to inform the Court by 4 November 2019 in the first case and 5 November 2019 in the second case as to whether it wishes to exercise its right to intervene in those cases.

The Law Office has relatively informed the Foreign Ministry about this development with which is in contact order to take final decisions on the matter.
