President of Cyprus:Our pursuit is a functional viable settlement

"We want a solution, peace and peaceful coexistence"

The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said on Thursday that he told the UN Secretary-General and the Turkish Cypriot leader, during their informal meeting in Berlin, earlier this week, that Nicosia’s only pursuit is the evolution of the Republic of Cyprus to lead to a functional, viable settlement which will bring about a normal state, away from foreign dependencies, guarantees and occupation troops.

We want to live free in order to be able to create together, otherwise our fate will be prescribed by the will of a third country, that of Turkey, the President said while addressing a trade union gathering of secondary education teachers.

We want a solution, peace and peaceful coexistence, but this cannot be attained by according different privileges to the communities, the President added. He said moreover that political equality should not lead to political inequality.

The most important thing is to have a normal state that is able to function and survive, said President Anastasiades, adding that “this is our pursuit, this is my vision and this will be my objective until the end of my Presidency.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
