The monument will remind us of Cyprus’ decisive role in promoting peace, security and international cooperation in our region. But most importantly, it symbolizes our tireless efforts to find a comprehensive and viable solution that will reunite our island”, said President Anastasiades at the event.

“A solution that will allow us through stability and lasting peace to create conditions for peaceful co-existence and a prosperous future for all Cypriots”, the President added.

He pointed out that the monument “symbolizes the long-standing friendship between Cypriots and Russians and the excellent relations between the two countries”.

He also said that the Russian community living in Cyprus, especially in Limassol, has had an important contribution to further strengthening these relations and the cooperation between Cyprus and Russia.

Russian Ambassador in Nicosia Stanislav Osadchiy referred to the close relations between the two countries. Recalling that recently the world celebrated Victory Day and that Cyprus lost 30,000 people in the war against fascism, the Ambassador said that the monument “will remind us that we have to preserve peace”.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
