Prodromou: President proceeds optimistic to the tripartite

Spokesman says President opts for results on terms of reference during tripartite meeting in Berlin

Cyprus Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou on Friday 8/11 said that President Nicos Anastasiades was ready and determined for the tripartite meeting in Berlin on November 25 with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, under the aegis of the UN SG Antonio Guterres.

In a statement to Cyprus News Agency, Prodromou said that “our aim is for the negotiations to produce results as regards the terms of reference that would allow for the talks to resume”. He referred to statements made earlier by the President who said he hopes there would be results “if the other side possesses the same determination and political will we possess”.

Sources told CNA, however, that Greek Cypriot side proceeds to the tripartite meeting with cautious optimism. Same sources said that Turkey does not favours a tripartite meeting but a Conference instead, to take place after the ‘’elections procedure’’ in the occupied areas.

In mid-November, the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute will be in Cyprus to prepare for the meeting of the leaders with the SG in Berlin. President Anastasiades said yesterday that Lute will be in Cyprus on 15th November for a meeting with him the following day at 1830 local time.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Turkey has ignored numerous UN resolutions calling for the withdrawal of the Turkish troops and respect of the integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.

Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The last round of negotiations, in the summer of 2017, at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
