US Congress delegation expresses support to Cyprus

US Congressional delegation expressed support for the Republic of Cyprus’ right to develop its natural resources

A nine-member bipartisan delegation of the US House of Representatives visited Cyprus this weekend, expressing  the US support for the Republic of Cyprus’ right to develop its natural resources. 

According to a press release by the US Embassy in Nicosia, the Congressional delegation met with Minister of Defense, Savvas Angelides, Minister of Commerce, Industry, Tourism and Energy, Yiorgos Lakkotrypis and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar.

They discussed strengthening bilateral security cooperation and expressed US support for the Republic of Cyprus’ right to develop its natural resources, the press release says, adding that the delegation encouraged efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus problem to forge a just and lasting settlement that would offer a prosperous and peaceful future for all Cypriots. 

The delegation was headed by Ted Deutch (D-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and International Terrorism of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The visit was part of a regional trip that also includes Israel, Qatar and Greece.
