US embassy spokesperson: US position on Iranian tanker clear

We are committed to denying resources to the Quds forces, said the spokesperson

The United States has made it clear that anyone who supports this tanker, anyone who allows ship Adrian Darya 1 to dock, or unloads its crude oil is at risk of receiving sanctions from the United States, a spokesperson of the US Embassy in Nicosia has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

The spokesperson was invited to comment information published in “Phileleftheros” newspaper according to which the US warned the Cypriot embassy in Washington, as it did with other Mediterranean countries, that any assistance provided to the tanker which is sailing eastward through the Mediterranean would be considered as providing support to a terrorist organization.

“The United States has made it clear that anyone who supports this tanker, anyone who allows the ship to dock, or unloads its crude oil is at risk of receiving sanctions from the United States,” the spokesperson said, adding that “we are committed to denying resources to the Quds forces (of Iran`s Revolutionary Guards - IRGC), an organization that has conducted a horrific terror campaign, killing countless Americans and people all around the world.”

British Royal Marines seized the vessel in Gibraltar in July on suspicion that it was carrying oil to Syria, a close ally of Iran, in violation of European Union sanctions. The detention was ended earlier this month and The Grace 1, renamed the Adrian Darya 1, left anchorage off Gibraltar on Sunday.

A federal court in Washington had issued a warrant for the seizure of the tanker, but Gibraltar said it could not comply with that request because it was bound by EU law.
