«Dear comrades,

It is both an honor and a pleasure to have the opportunity to communicate with you.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid Pandemic it will be impossible for me to take part in this imperative – for our party meeting.

I, however, still wish to present our views on the agenda’s main subject, that of «EU and Turkey relations».

It is a well-known fact that the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean constitute strategic regions of vital importance, they are however highly volatile and unstable.

The reasons being:

  • The maritime transport routes,
  • The gas pipelines from Asia to Europe that are passing through the Mediterranean,
  • The Middle Eastern and North African energy sources, and
  • The discovery of Natural Gas.
  • All of the above are factors which provoke a conflict of interests between the regional states.

With Cyprus‘ accession into the EU in 2004, the external borders of the Union have extended to cover the largest part of this region, thus upgrading the geostrategic role of the EU. It is therefore of vital importance that we protect them.

Turkey has been illegally occupying 37% of the Republic of Cyprus since 1974 and Turkey’s subsequent governments have concentrated their efforts to the permanent division of the island, the separation of the population on the basis of ethnicity and religious origin, and to achieving complete political and military control over the island.

The above are part of a larger plan, which Turkey has conceived in the decade of the 1950s with an end goal that is nothing less than the annexation of the entire island by Turkey, thus giving Turkey absolute control over the Eastern Mediterranean.

Since 2015 Turkey has been carrying out what can only be described as a third military invasion in the EEZs of both Cyprus and Greece. After the agreement with Libya it has increased its aggressiveness against the two member states. Recently the Turkish government and the illegal regime of the Occupation (which is under the complete control of the Turkish government) have presented their plan for settling the town of Famagusta – with blatant disregard of the U.N resolutions. These actions go directly against the European Union's interests and principles.

The Turkish government's role in supporting and managing the flow of irregular immigration and terrorism against EU member states should also not be overlooked.

The question is: How will the EU protect its interests while supporting the people of its member states whose rights are violated on a daily basis by Turkey?

Now is the time for the EU to:

  • Impose financial and commercial measures against Turkey,
  • Avoid upgrading any political, financial, and commercial agreements with Turkey,
  • Impose tangible sanctions against the Turkish regime.
  • If the EU continues to tolerate Turkey's transgressions it will be indirectly supporting its aggressiveness, thus compromising regional stability and peace, and consequently the EU's own security and integrity. It is therefore of utmost importance that the EU does not downgrade its own geostrategic role by allowing Turkey to run rampant in the region.

As a socialist party, our core values of Democracy, Justice, and Solidarity cannot allow us to overlook Turkey's transgressions and we must therefore demand that the EU imposes measures and sanctions against the Turkish Government in order for the sovereign rights of the member states to be protected.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity, to stress the fact that the Cyprus Problem is not simply a territorial dispute but is instead an ongoing illegal military occupation of the Republic of Cyprus by a foreign nation.

With comradely greetings,

Marinos Sizopoulos”
